Week 10: The Benefits of Virtualization

Virtualization is the process of using powerful software on a computer to create an environment that imitates what you see in the physical computer. It uses the components of the host computers and creates a virtual computer using the software. Some benefits of virtualization are power saving, hardware consolidation, system recovery, and research.

·       Power saving – Virtualization lets you run multiple systems from one single host computer, enabling you to save power consumption.

·       Hardware consolidation – like power saving, it lets one host computer help with hardware consolidation. However, the host computer does need power components since it needs to divide the RAM and CPU across the active virtual computer.

·       System recovery – In a single system, if a website or application gets hacked or has malware, you must restore the system from backup, which requires time and effort. Virtualization allows you to create a snapshot, and you need to shut down the virtualization and get back to Snapchat.

·       Research – due to the capability of virtualization, you can have multiple systems with different operating systems, allowing you to rest different things in many different systems.
